What is a Pre-Purchase Inspection?

Subaru Service

Even though used cars are more reliable than ever, a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is always a good idea. What is a PPI for cars? It's a thorough inspection that checks for any mechanical, cosmetic, and/or safety issues a used car might have. For Gillman Subaru Southwest customers, a PPI can instill great peace of mind before you sign the dotted line.

What is a PPI, and Who Conducts it?

A PPI is a detailed vehicle inspection conducted by a certified mechanic - for example, one of our factory-trained Subaru service technicians - with the goal of assessing the quality of a used car's mechanical, aesthetic, and safety systems. The typical PPI process includes a complete visual inspection of the exterior, an inspection of the undercarriage, a road test, and diagnostic scanning of the vehicle's computer to check for anything suspicious.

Once complete, the technician will produce a comprehensive write-up. This document identifies any existing conditions, describes any future problems that might develop, and cites any prior damage that has or has not been appropriately fixed. Every facet of a PPI is designed to help buyers at our Houston, TX Subaru dealership make an informed purchase decision regarding a used automobile.

When is a PPI Necessary?

There are a couple reasons when a PPI might be necessary. One of the biggest is if you're planning to purchase a used car that isn't under warranty. Without a warranty, you, as the buyer, must assume responsibility for any problems the car experiences down the road.

Another reason to purchase a PPI is if the car you want to buy is located in another city or state. Since you might not be able to test drive the vehicle or really get to know it seller, you could ask us to schedule a PPI with a Subaru dealership near where the car is located. This way, you'll receive a professional, unbiased opinion of the vehicle's condition.
