The Subaru Outback roof rack weight limit is an important consideration when transporting bicycles, kayaks, camping equipment, or additional luggage. The 2027 Subaru Outback features raised roof rails with integrated tie-down points, supporting up to 220 lbs while driving and 800 lbs when parked, based on the current roof rail specifications. At Gillman Subaru Southwest, you can explore how the Subaru Outback accommodates different cargo-carrying needs.
What Is the Difference Between Dynamic and Static Roof Weight Limits?
The Subaru Outback has two primary roof weight ratings that apply under different conditions.
- Dynamic Weight Limit: 220 lbs. This is the maximum weight supported by the roof rails while the vehicle is moving. The total includes crossbars, cargo carriers, mounting accessories, and the equipment being transported.
- Static Weight Limit: 800 lbs. This applies when the Subaru Outback is parked on level ground with the load properly secured and evenly distributed. The higher capacity accommodates equipment such as rooftop tents and their occupants.
These ratings apply to the roof rail system. Crossbars and accessories may have lower individual weight limits, so the lowest applicable rating determines how much equipment you can safely carry.
What Can You Carry on the Subaru Outback Roof Rack?
The Subaru Outback supports several types of roof-mounted equipment when paired with compatible crossbars and attachments.
- Bicycles: Roof-mounted bike carriers can transport bicycles while preserving interior cargo space.
- Kayaks: Compatible kayak carriers secure watercraft to the roof using specialized mounting hardware.
- Cargo Boxes: Enclosed rooftop cargo carriers provide additional storage for luggage, camping supplies, and sports equipment.
- Skis and Snowboards: Dedicated carriers hold winter sports equipment without taking up passenger or cargo space.
- Rooftop Tents: Compatible rooftop tents can take advantage of the Subaru Outback's higher stationary roof weight capacity.
Before installing any accessory, verify that the combined weight of the mounting equipment and cargo remains within the applicable limit.
